Best Water Softener for Apartments and Condos: 3 Picks Scored for Renters

Best Picks
Small apartment kitchen with a metal sink and minimal cabinets, the kind of tight space a compact water softener for an apartment has to fit around

The best water softener for apartments is the one that clears three renter blockers before it ever softens a gallon: it has to fit the space, it needs a drain for regeneration, and you have to be allowed to install it and take it out again. If you have written permission, a drain and an outlet, the Aquasure Harmony Lite 34k is the narrowest whole-unit pick at 10.5 inches wide, and the EcoPure EP31 suits a slightly wider space. If you have none of those, the On The Go double portable softens the washer or shower feed with hose threads and leaves with you.

The Three Renter Blockers, Scored

Most "best softener" lists rank on grain capacity. In an apartment, capacity is rarely the problem. A one- or two-bedroom unit uses little water, and almost any softener has enough capacity for it. What stops the install is space, drainage and the lease. So every pick here is scored against those three first.

Footprints from the makers' product pages and retailer listings.

Read the table left to right. If you cannot pass a column, the picks to its left do not matter. A drain or outlet problem has workarounds, which our guide to a softener with no drain or outlet ranks by cost. A lease that forbids the work has no workaround except the portable.

How We Chose

Methodology. Nothing on this page was physically tested. Picks were chosen from manufacturer product pages, owner's manuals and retailer specifications.

  • Included: softeners sold on Amazon that either fit a closet-sized footprint (under about 16 inches wide) or need no plumbing changes at all.
  • Scored on: footprint, whether a drain and outlet are needed, and whether the unit can be removed without damage. Capacity and iron rating were checked second.
  • Excluded: two-tank softeners with a separate brine tank (too much floor space for most units), twin-tank systems, and the Whirlpool WHES18 and Tier1 cabinet listings, whose current listings we could not confirm.
  • Prices are not listed here because they change often. Use the buttons to see the current price on Amazon.

Best Water Softener for Apartments With Permission and a Drain

Aquasure Harmony Lite 34k: narrowest whole-unit pick

  • Size: 10.5 inches wide, 18.5 inches deep, 43 inches tall, per the dimensions on Aquasure's product page
  • Type: all-in-one cabinet, with the resin tank inside the salt bin and a digital metered control head
  • Sized for: 1–3 bathrooms and up to 4 people, city or well water, per Aquasure
  • Versions: standard resin (AS-HL34A) and fine-mesh resin (AS-HL34FM) at Aquasure's store. The Amazon listing pairs the fine-mesh model with a sediment pre-filter, so check which version you are ordering

At 10.5 inches wide, the Harmony Lite fits beside a water heater, in a laundry closet or at the end of a utility shelf where a standard two-tank softener would never go. The fine-mesh version is the one to pick if your building is on a well or the water shows any iron staining.

Watch for: the warranty wording. Aquasure has advertised an extended warranty on registration, but its own pages and Amazon copy have given different lengths, so confirm the term on the listing you buy from. It also needs a drain and an outlet like any metered softener.

EcoPure EP31: best when you have a little more width

  • Size: about 15.5 inches wide, 19.75 deep and 47.75 tall, per retailer listings
  • Capacity: 31,000 grains, for households of 1–4 people
  • Water limits: listed for up to 110 gpg hardness and 8 ppm of clear-water (ferrous) iron
  • Connections: 1-inch NPT

The EP31 is a single cabinet that learns the household's water use and regenerates ahead of need. It is about 5 inches wider than the Harmony Lite and nearly 5 inches taller, so measure the closet including the lid opening. It is the better of the two if the unit's water carries noticeable clear-water iron.

Watch for: its height with the salt lid open, and the drain. Like the Harmony Lite, it sends regeneration water to a drain every cycle.

Best Water Softener for Apartments Without Permission

On The Go double portable: the no-plumbing option

  • Size and weight: 22 inches tall, 9.5 inches across, about 32 lb, per the On The Go product page
  • Capacity: 16,000 grains in 0.52 cu ft of resin; 3 gpm flow
  • Gallons per regeneration (maker's figures): 2,285 at 7 gpg, 1,454 at 11 gpg, 1,066 at 15 gpg, 640 at 25 gpg
  • Regeneration: two boxes of table salt, under 30 minutes, no electricity

This is built for RVs, but its garden-hose threads are what make it useful in a rental. A washing machine's supply valves use the same hose thread, so the softener can sit between the cold valve and the washer's cold inlet hose. Nothing is cut or glued, and it leaves with you.

Laundry gets soft cold water; nothing in the wall is touched

Watch for: what it does not do. It softens only the line it is on. The kitchen tap, the shower and the water heater stay hard unless you move it. At 3 gpm it also limits a shower if you connect it there. For two people doing laundry a few times a week on 15 gpg water, 1,066 gallons lasts a long time. If you plumb it to a shower with adapters instead, expect to regenerate every week or two.

Check These Lease and HOA Clauses Before You Buy

Read the lease, and in a condo the association's declaration and rules, for these five things before you spend anything:

  1. Alterations or improvements. Most leases ban changes to plumbing without written consent. A cut-in softener is a plumbing change.
  2. Fixtures and restoration. Some leases say anything attached becomes the owner's property. Others say you must remove it and repair the damage at move-out. Know which before you install.
  3. Appliances. Some leases limit tenant-installed appliances, especially ones connected to water. This is where a portable on the washer feed can still need a word with the landlord.
  4. Water damage and insurance. If a softener leaks into the unit below, the lease and your renter's or condo policy decide who pays. Ask your insurer whether a tenant-installed softener changes anything.
  5. Shared supply lines. In many buildings, one riser feeds several units. A softener on a shared line softens your neighbours' water and needs the building's approval, not just yours.

Our page on water softeners in rental properties covers who pays for salt and repairs, and the fixture question at move-out. For the condo side, including how to tell whether your unit has its own supply branch, see water softeners in condos, apartments and HOA properties.

Which Apartment Softener Fits Your Unit

Decision chart for the best water softener for apartments: no written permission means portable only, no drain means portable or a drain workaround, then space width picks Harmony Lite or EcoPure EP31
Permission rules out more installs than floor space does

Size is the last question, not the first. A one-bedroom with two people on 15 gpg water uses about 2,250 grains of hardness a day at 75 gallons per person. Both cabinet picks have far more capacity than that, so set the valve's salt dose low and let it regenerate every week or so. The full method is in how to size a water softener.

The drain matters more than people expect. Penn State Extension puts regeneration water at about 50 gallons a cycle. The drain also has to accept the valve's drain flow; the manual for one compact cabinet we checked, the Whirlpool WHES18, lists 2 gpm. A bathroom sink drain is not a substitute for a standpipe or a floor drain.

Who Should Buy None of These

  • Renters who will move within a year and only want soft water in the shower. A shower filter will not soften, but it is the cheapest way to deal with chlorine. If softening is the point, the portable is the only pick that moves with you.
  • Units on a shared supply line without building approval. Any cut-in softener here treats water for other people.
  • Buildings that already soften centrally. Test the tap before buying. Some condo buildings soften the whole supply.
  • Units with very high iron or sulfur smell. These need treatment upstream that an apartment rarely has room for.

In an apartment, the best softener is the one you are allowed to install and can take with you. Get the written OK first, check the drain second, and measure the space last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you put a water softener in an apartment?

Yes, if the unit has its own water supply line, there is a drain and an outlet nearby, and the lease or HOA allows a plumbing change in writing. If any of those is missing, a portable softener that connects with hose threads to the washer or shower feed is the practical option. It needs no drain at the install point and comes out without leaving a mark.

What is the smallest whole-unit water softener?

Among the units on this page, the Aquasure Harmony Lite is the narrowest whole-unit option at 10.5 inches wide, 18.5 inches deep and 43 inches tall, per Aquasure's product images. The EcoPure EP31 is about 15.5 inches wide. A portable such as the On The Go double model is far smaller, about 9.5 inches across and 22 inches tall, but it softens only the line it is connected to.

Do I need my landlord's permission to install a water softener?

For anything that cuts into the plumbing, almost certainly. Most leases restrict alterations and plumbing changes without written consent. Many also say that anything attached to the property becomes a fixture or must be removed and the damage repaired at move-out. Get the approval in writing. A hose-connected portable on the washer feed usually counts as an appliance accessory rather than an alteration, but check the lease wording.

Does a portable water softener work in an apartment?

It works for whatever you route through it. The common renter setup puts it between the washer's cold valve and the washing machine, so laundry is softened. It does not soften the kitchen tap or the water heater. The On The Go double model softens about 1,066 gallons at 15 gpg between regenerations, according to its maker, then needs table salt and a flush to a tub drain or outdoors.

What if my apartment has no drain near the water line?

A cabinet softener needs a drain every time it regenerates, typically for the backwash and rinse water. Without one, your options are a longer drain run to a laundry standpipe, a small pump to lift the discharge, or a portable unit that you regenerate somewhere else. Check the drain first, because it rules out more apartment installs than floor space does.
