Home Depot vs Lowe's Water Softeners: Which Store Sells What, and for How Much

Comparisons
Black and white photo of a shopper walking down a long DIY store aisle, the big-box setting where Home Depot and Lowe's sell water softeners

Home Depot vs Lowe's water softeners is mostly a question of brands, not stores, because the two shelves barely overlap. On 2 October 2026 Home Depot's listings were built around Rheem, GE, WaterBoss, Aquasure and APEC. Lowe's was built around Whirlpool and A.O. Smith. The price bands overlap almost completely. The most useful thing to know is that some models are twins under different badges. Home Depot's Rheem RHS32 and Lowe's Whirlpool WHES33 publish the same capacity figures and come from the same maker. Both stores install through independent contractors, so the store's name is not the installer's.

How this lineup map was built. No unit was physically tested. Both stores block automated tools, so the lineup is taken from each store's product listings as they appeared in search results on 2 October 2026, cross-checked against the makers' own pages and manuals. Installation terms are quoted from each store's service pages as indexed that day. Treat the lineup as a snapshot.

  • Included: whole-house salt-based softeners listed by either store.
  • Excluded: salt-free "descalers" and conditioners, refill salt and cleaners, and Whirlpool's WHES40E, which Lowe's no longer sells.
  • Prices are not listed here because they change often. Use the buttons to see the current price on Amazon. Where a model had no live Amazon listing, the Amazon column records its listing status.

Store lineups from homedepot.com and lowes.com listings as shown in search results on 2 October 2026; neither page could be opened directly. "Not confirmed" means we found no live Amazon listing to check. Lowe's also lists some Aquasure products; we could not confirm which softener models.

Three patterns stand out:

  1. Each store has its own cabinet brands. Rheem and GE are Home Depot names in this snapshot; Whirlpool and A.O. Smith are Lowe's names. A.O. Smith runs a dedicated site for its Lowe's range, aosmithatlowes.com, which lists the 350C, 400T and 450T with Lowe's item numbers.
  2. Home Depot carries more two-tank systems. The Aquasure Harmony units are conventional resin-tank-plus-brine-tank softeners. The Lowe's snapshot has no two-tank system that we could identify.
  3. The model number is capacity at the heaviest salt dose. A "44" or "45" will not deliver that at a normal salt setting. Size from usable capacity, as explained in advertised vs usable softener capacity, and from your daily load, as in how to size a water softener.

Twin Models Across the Aisle

Several big-box softener brands are badges on one maker's platform. NSF's certification listings name Water Channel Partners of Eagan, Minnesota behind Whirlpool, Rheem, Morton and EcoPure softeners. That lets you compare across the two stores:

Home DepotLowe'sWhat is the sameWhat differs
Rheem RHS32Whirlpool WHES33Capacity at all three salt doses, 0.88 cu ft of resin, 105 gpg limit, same makerRated 4,940 gr/lb (Rheem manual) vs 4,950 (Whirlpool product page); iron rating 8 vs 9 ppm; price on the day

The rest of the two lineups are not twins. The Rheem RHS42 (1.2 cubic feet of resin, 9.9 gpm) and the Whirlpool WHES44 (1.23 cubic feet, 8.2 gpm on NSF's listing) are close in size, but their flow ratings differ. A.O. Smith and GE come from different makers altogether: A.O. Smith warrants its own Lowe's range, and GE Appliances, a Haier company, warrants GE's.

Stacked shopping carts with orange and yellow handles at a big-box store, where the same cabinet water softener can carry a different badge and price

If you live near both stores and want a 32,000 to 33,000-grain cabinet, the cheaper twin on the day wins.

Warranty by Brand

The store does not set the warranty; the maker does. Here is what each shelf brand's own documents say:

Brand (store)Full partsElectronicsTanks / major partsExtension
Whirlpool (Lowe's)1 year parts and labor; 2 on PRO models3 years10 years, tanksTo 5 or 10 years with registration and Whirlpool cleanser every four months
Rheem (Home Depot)1 year parts and labor3 years, control board10 years, salt and resin tanksTo 5 years with Rheem cleaner every four months
A.O. Smith (Lowe's)3 years, mechanical and electronic partsincluded in the 3 years10 years, media tank, main control valve and brine cabinetNone stated; media excluded
WaterBoss (Home Depot)3 years, mechanical and electronic (manual we read)included10 years, tank, valve body and cabinetRetail listings for the Model 900 advertise 5 years on parts; check the card
Aquasure (Home Depot)1 year, or 5 years on valve, electronics and resin if registered within 60 daysincluded10 years, resin and brine tanksRegistration

Sources: Whirlpool's extended-warranty page and manual, Rheem's owner's manuals, A.O. Smith's Lowe's-range warranty, the WaterBoss manual and Aquasure's warranty page.

On paper, the A.O. Smith range has the longest unconditional cover: three years on moving parts and ten on the tank, valve and cabinet, with no cleanser purchases required. Its warranty ships parts "with installation instructions for use by a licensed plumber" and does not cover labor. Whirlpool and Rheem include labor in year one, but their longer terms depend on buying their cleanser. How to weigh conditions like these is covered in how to read a water softener warranty.

Installation: What Each Store's Service Promises

Neither store sends its own employees to plumb in a softener. Both use independent installers, and the terms differ.

Lowe's. Its water softener installation page, as indexed on 2 October 2026, says:

  • "All installers are background checked, insured and licensed (where applicable)."
  • Installation "includes materials, disposal, testing and initial supply of salt if applicable."
  • It does not include structural modifications or commercial installations.
  • The installation is guaranteed for one year, with Lowe's warranting that the work will be performed by an independent installer "in a good and workmanlike manner".

Home Depot. Its water treatment service pages, as indexed the same day, describe:

  • Installers who are "local, licensed, insured and have undergone a thorough background-screening process".
  • A free in-home consultation that includes a water test and a basic plumbing inspection, with a system recommended afterwards.
  • Pricing set after that visit, rather than a fixed install fee on the product page.

Third-party write-ups describe a one-year labor guarantee on Home Depot installations too. We could not open the terms page to confirm it, so get the labor guarantee written into your contract.

The practical difference: Lowe's describes an install of a unit you choose. Home Depot's in-home route starts with a consultation and ends with a quote. In both cases ask for the line items. A loop, a drain run with an air gap, an outlet and a permit can easily double the job, and they are broken down in water softener installation cost. Fixr's national installation cost guide puts labor alone at about $150 to $1,000.

If you would rather fit it yourself, the job is manageable in a house with an existing loop. The steps are in how to install a whole-house water softener.

The Amazon Column: Same Box, Different Price?

The plan for this comparison was to show where Amazon undercuts the stores. On 2 October 2026 that was not possible for most of the lineup:

  • Rheem is not sold on Amazon at all.
  • Whirlpool WHES33 and WaterBoss 900 listings showed as currently unavailable.
  • GE's older GXSH40V is discontinued; its 2025 replacement, the GXSH35W, is on Amazon.
  • Aquasure Harmony 48,000 is sold at both Home Depot and Aquasure's own store, and its Amazon listing is live.
  • A.O. Smith's Lowe's range is sold through Lowe's; we found no Amazon listing to compare.

So for now the stores are where most of these units can actually be bought. Where an Amazon listing does exist, compare the delivered price and whose warranty and returns terms apply.

Picks From the Lineup, by Situation

These are the models from either store we would shortlist, each with a live purchase route:

  • Two bathrooms, moderate hardness, space for two tanks: Aquasure Harmony 32,000, sold at Home Depot and Aquasure. One cubic foot of resin and a metered valve. Its usable capacity at an efficient salt setting is about 21,000 grains. Check price on Amazon
  • A family of four or more: Aquasure Harmony 48,000, sold at Home Depot and Aquasure. It has 1.5 cubic feet of resin, more than any cabinet in either snapshot that publishes its resin volume. Check price on Amazon
  • Well water with some clear-water iron, cabinet wanted: WaterBoss 900, sold at Home Depot. Its Amazon listing was unavailable on our check, so buy it in store if that is still the case. Check price on Amazon
  • Softener and drinking-water RO in one purchase: APEC WH-SOFTENER-30-FG, sold at Home Depot. It is a 30,000-grain softener bundled with a six-stage alkaline RO system. Only buy it if you want the RO as well; as a softener alone it is small for what the bundle costs. Check price on Amazon

Among the cabinet units, choose on the warranty table above and the price on the day. The Rheem RHS32 and Whirlpool WHES33 are the same design, so buy whichever is cheaper.

Five Checks Before You Buy at Either Store

  1. Read the box for the salt dose behind the grain number. If the box or manual gives capacity at several doses, size from the middle one.
  2. Check the flow rating and pressure drop. A cabinet rated at 7 to 8 gpm suits two bathrooms, not four.
  3. Find the iron rating and the type of iron it covers. Every cabinet here is rated for clear-water (ferrous) iron only.
  4. Note the warranty conditions. Registration deadlines and cleanser purchases decide whether the long number on the box applies.
  5. Ask about the softener salt. Both stores sell it in 40 lb bags. A year's salt for a family of four on 15 gpg can run to ten bags or more, so budget for it from the start.

When to Skip Both Stores

  • Well water with more than a few ppm of iron, manganese or sulfur. The cabinet units are rated for clear-water iron only, and none of them is a filter. Test first and plan any pre-treatment before you buy.
  • Peak flow above about 8 gpm. Most cabinets in both lineups are rated near 8 gpm. A large house with several bathrooms in use at once needs a bigger valve and resin bed than either shelf offers.
  • Very hard water in a big household. A 1-cubic-foot cabinet regenerates every two to three days at 25 gpg for five people. A larger two-tank system bought online, or a dealer system, will suit better.
  • Buyers who want no salt. Both stores also sell salt-free units, but those condition water rather than soften it. The trade-offs are in salt-based vs salt-free water treatment.

The short version of Home Depot vs Lowe's water softeners: Home Depot has more brands and the two-tank Aquasure units; Lowe's has Whirlpool and the longest unconditional cabinet warranty in A.O. Smith. For a mid-size cabinet, check both, because the Rheem and Whirlpool twins cost different amounts for the same design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Home Depot or Lowe's have better water softeners?

Neither store is better across the board, because they stock different brands. On 2 October 2026 Home Depot's listings centred on Rheem, GE, WaterBoss, Aquasure and APEC. Lowe's centred on Whirlpool and A.O. Smith, and the two price bands overlapped almost completely. Compare the specific models on resin volume, flow and warranty, not the store.

Is the Rheem softener at Home Depot the same as the Whirlpool at Lowe's?

The two closest models are. Rheem's RHS32 and Whirlpool's WHES33 publish the same capacity at all three salt doses, their efficiency ratings differ by 10 grains per pound, and NSF lists both under Water Channel Partners of Eagan, Minnesota. Check the current price at each store and buy whichever is cheaper on the day.

Does Home Depot install water softeners?

Home Depot offers installation through local independent service providers. Its service pages, as indexed on 2 October 2026, describe them as local, licensed and insured, with background screening, and describe a free in-home consultation and water test before a system is recommended. Pricing is set after that visit. Get the scope and labor guarantee in writing.

Does Lowe's install water softeners?

Yes, through independent installers. Lowe's water softener installation page, as indexed on 2 October 2026, says installers are background checked, insured and licensed where applicable, that installation includes materials, disposal, testing and an initial supply of salt where applicable, and that the installation is guaranteed for one year. Structural changes are excluded.

Are Home Depot and Lowe's water softeners cheaper on Amazon?

Usually there is nothing to compare at the moment. Most store models were not buyable on Amazon on our check: Rheem is not sold there, and the Whirlpool WHES33 and WaterBoss 900 listings showed as unavailable. The Aquasure Harmony 48,000 is sold at Home Depot and Aquasure's own store and has a live Amazon listing, so compare the current price at each on the day, because Amazon prices change often.
