Water Softener Return Policies and Trial Periods: 7 Brands and Amazon Compared

Prices and Buying
Delivery worker moving a large boxed package on a hand truck along a suburban driveway, the freight a buyer pays when returning a water softener

Water softener return policies run from 30 days to 12 months, but the length of the window is the least important part. What decides whether you can get your money back is the condition clause: SpringWell and Aquasure take back only unused units in their packaging, while SoftPro and NuvoH2O accept a system that has been installed. Restocking fees run from nothing to 20%, and the buyer pays the return freight almost everywhere. A "6-month money-back guarantee" badge is usually a returns window for a boxed unit, not a trial period.

Below, seven brands' policies are compared clause by clause from their own documents, alongside Amazon's standard window and the federal rule that covers softeners sold in your home.

How we read the policies. Every term above is quoted or closely paraphrased from the brand's own returns, warranty or help-centre page, read on 2 October 2026. Where a brand does not publish a term, the table says so rather than guessing. Nothing was bought and returned for this page.

  • Included: brands with whole-house or full-size units sold on Amazon, whose returns terms could be read online. Eddy and ScaleBlaster are electronic descalers and AquaTru is a drinking-water RO unit. They are included because shoppers compare their guarantees with softener guarantees, not because they soften water.
  • Excluded: dealer brands such as Culligan, Kinetico, EcoWater, RainSoft and Hague, which sell through local dealers on contracts that vary by dealer. They are covered in the dealer section below.
  • Prices are not listed here because they change often. Use the buttons to see the current price on Amazon. SpringWell's Amazon listing would not load when we checked, and its Amazon listings showed "Currently unavailable" on 1 October, so buying direct may be the only option.
Bar chart of water softener return policies by brand: 30 days for Aquasure, AquaTru and Amazon, 90 days for NuvoH2O and ScaleBlaster, 6 months for SpringWell and SoftPro, 12 months for Eddy
The colour matters more than the length: only some windows cover a unit you have installed

The Clause That Decides Everything: Installed or Boxed

Read the table by the fifth column first. A salt-based softener cannot be judged in its box. You learn whether it works only after it is plumbed in, the hardness is programmed and it has run through a few regenerations. That takes a week or two at least. So a policy that only takes back uninstalled units is insurance against changing your mind or ordering the wrong size, not against the softener failing to solve your water problem.

SpringWell's policy is the clearest example. Its returns page accepts SpringWell-branded items within six months "provided the products are in their original, unused condition (uninstalled and in undamaged packaging)". The six-month figure on the product page is real, but it is a shelf window, not a trial. For units that do not perform once installed, SpringWell offers what it calls a "6-month Performance Promise": troubleshooting help and replacement parts, not a refund. Defective products are handled separately, and SpringWell says it refunds them in full, excluding installation costs.

SoftPro takes the opposite approach. Its warranty, shipping and refund policy gives 6 months from the ship date and asks you to "return the complete system, clean and drained, with all parts". It does not exclude installed units, and there is no restocking fee. SoftPro asks to troubleshoot first, and you need a return authorisation number before shipping anything.

NuvoH2O sits in between. Its warranty and returns page accepts returns authorised within 90 days, and states that once a system "is installed by a NuvoH2O partner, customers will be subject to a 20% restocking fee". Unused units must go back in their original factory packaging.

Aquasure's own-store refund policy reads like a general retail policy: 30 days after receipt, the item "in the same condition that you received it", unused and in original packaging, with proof of purchase. That rules out an installed softener.

What a Return Actually Costs You

The headline refund is the price you paid minus three things: the restocking fee, the original shipping you will not get back, and the freight to send it back. Only the first is a published percentage. Here is what the fees alone come to on an illustrative $1,500 system.

Brand and returnRestocking feeFee on a $1,500 systemPlus
SpringWell, boxed10%$150Return freight, original shipping
SpringWell, refused or complicated returnup to 25%up to $375Return freight
SoftPro, installed and drainednone$0Return freight, original shipping
NuvoH2O, installed by partner20%$300Return freight
Aquasure, boxednone stated$0Any original shipping

Illustrative: apply each percentage to the price you actually paid. Freight depends on carrier, weight and distance, and none of these brands publishes a figure, so it is left out rather than estimated.

Freight is the cost people forget. A two-tank softener with a brine tank is a large, heavy shipment, and most of these policies put it on you. Before buying, ask the brand what a typical return freight charge is for your size and region, and whether it can supply a discounted label. A brand that will not answer that question before the sale is unlikely to be more helpful after it.

There is also a cost no policy covers: installation. If a plumber fitted the unit, that labour is gone whether or not the refund comes through, and so is the cost of taking it out again. SpringWell says so outright for defective refunds. Typical labour figures are in the guide to water softener installation cost.

Brand-by-Brand Notes From the Policies

SpringWell: a long window for a boxed unit

  • Window: six months from the original purchase date.
  • Fee: 10% on approved non-defective returns, rising to up to 25% of the order value for refused or complicated returns.
  • Shipping: "Return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer." Original shipping is not refunded.
  • Defects: contact support within 30 days of delivery for an exchange, and SpringWell provides a prepaid return label.

Watch for: the gap between the badge and the policy. Treat the six months as time to unbox, check the parts and measure your space, not as time to see if the water improves.

SoftPro: the nearest thing to a trial among salt softeners

  • Window: six months from the ship date.
  • Fee: "There is no restocking fee."
  • Shipping: the buyer pays return shipping, and original shipping is not refunded.
  • Condition: complete system, clean and drained, with all parts. Call for a return authorisation first.
  • Excluded: special orders, commercial systems, filter media, cartridges and test kits are final sale.

Watch for: the troubleshooting step. SoftPro asks to work through the problem before accepting a return. Keep a written log of hardness tests and settings, so that conversation is short.

NuvoH2O: installed returns accepted, at a price

  • Window: returns must be authorised within 90 days of purchase, and the goods must arrive within 30 days of the return being started.
  • Fee: 20% on 90-day money-back returns "unless otherwise stated", and $699.99 on financed purchases after installation.
  • Third-party purchases: "must be returned through those partners and are subject to their return policies."

Watch for: what you are buying. NuvoH2O is a salt-free citric acid system, so it does not remove hardness. Measure scale results, not hardness, during the 90 days. Why a salt-free system tests hard is explained in does a salt-free system actually soften water.

Aquasure: a short, retail-style window

  • Window: 30 days after you receive the item.
  • Condition: unused, in original packaging, with proof of purchase.
  • Refund: to the original payment method within 10 business days of approval.

Watch for: the warranty registration. Aquasure's warranty page says that registering a softener within 60 days of purchase adds 4 years to its limited 1-year warranty. That, not the 30-day return window, is your protection once the unit is in.

Eddy and ScaleBlaster: long, use-based guarantees on descalers

Eddy's guarantee page says you "can return it at any time within 12 months after purchase for a no-quibble full refund of your purchase cost". ScaleBlaster's FAQ says "all residential units come with a full 90-day money-back guarantee" and explains why: results take up to a couple of months. Neither page publishes who pays return shipping or how to claim, so ask before buying.

These are the only true trial periods on this page, and there is a reason. Electronic descalers do not remove calcium or magnesium, so a hardness test will read the same before and after. Results are judged on scale, which is slow and hard to measure. The evidence on how they compare with softening is in water softener vs electronic descaler.

AquaTru: 30 days, minus shipping

AquaTru's help centre describes a 30-day money-back guarantee that starts on delivery, with shipping and handling deducted from the refund. AquaTru emails a label, and the unit goes back in its original packaging with all parts. It is a countertop drinking-water purifier, not a softener, and it is listed here because it is often bought alongside one.

Buying on Amazon: Whose Policy Applies

Amazon's standard policy lets you return most items within 30 days of delivery, in original or unused condition. It offers at least one free return option on most items, but says it may charge when you return "a heavy and/or bulky item". When a third-party seller ships the item itself, the return goes to that seller, not to Amazon.

That gives an Amazon buyer two separate promises:

  1. Amazon's 30 days, for the order.
  2. The brand's own guarantee, if the brand honours it for Amazon orders.

The brands do not always say. NuvoH2O states that purchases through third-party resellers must be returned through those resellers under their policies. SoftPro's and SpringWell's pages describe their own store terms. Before you order, send the brand a short message: "If I buy model X on Amazon, does your [N]-month guarantee apply, and to whom do I return it?" Keep the reply. If the answer is no, the Amazon order carries only Amazon's 30 days, which is about the time it takes to install and judge a softener.

Dealer Softeners: Cooling-Off Rights, Not Trial Periods

Culligan, Kinetico, EcoWater, RainSoft and Hague sell whole-house softeners through local dealers, not on Amazon. Their return terms are in each dealer's contract, which varies from one franchise or dealer to the next. There is no national policy to put in the table.

What dealer buyers do have is a federal right. When you buy in your home, the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives you until midnight of the third business day after the sale to cancel for a full refund, on sales of $25 or more made at home and $130 or more at temporary locations such as a home show. Saturday counts as a business day. Sunday and federal holidays do not. The seller must give you cancellation forms.

Hand signing an official document with a ballpoint pen, the in-home dealer contract that starts the three-day cooling-off period for a water softener sale

Three days is short, but it is the right moment to do the checks a demonstration skips. Test the hardness yourself, compare the quoted price against an online unit of the same size, and read the warranty document, not the brochure. How to read that document clause by clause is in how to read a water softener warranty.

If you want an online alternative to compare against a dealer quote, the units in the table above that accept installed returns are SoftPro and, at a 20% fee, NuvoH2O. Only SoftPro is a salt-based softener.

How to Keep Your Return Rights Intact

Most refused returns fail on a condition the buyer could have met. Before you open the box:

  • Test and record your hardness with a kit, not the city average. A unit that "does not work" because it was programmed for the wrong hardness is not a defect. See how to test water hardness at home.
  • Check the size before you install. Most returns of boxed units are sizing mistakes. Work it out from your household's daily use first, using how to size a water softener.
  • Photograph the delivery and the packaging before you open it. Damage claims need evidence.
  • Keep every box, insert and fitting until the window closes, even for a brand that accepts installed units. "Complete system" means complete.
  • Write down the window's start date. SoftPro counts from the ship date, SpringWell from purchase, Aquasure from receipt and Amazon from delivery.
  • Ask for the return authorisation before shipping anything. SoftPro and SpringWell both require one, and a parcel without one can be refused.
  • Keep a log of settings, hardness readings and regeneration dates once installed. It shortens the troubleshooting step and supports a claim.

Who Should Not Rely on a Return Policy

  • Anyone with iron, sulfur or a well that has not been tested. A softener that fails because the water needed a different treatment is usually your problem, not the brand's. Test first.
  • Buyers paying a plumber to install. The labour is not refundable under any policy here, so the real trial cost is the installation plus removal.
  • Shoppers choosing between two brands on the badge alone. A 6-month window for boxed units protects you less than a 6-month window for installed ones, and a 12-month guarantee on a descaler does not make it a softener.
  • Amazon buyers who have not confirmed the brand's terms in writing. Without that, you have Amazon's 30 days and nothing more.

The return policy is a tie-breaker, not a reason to buy. Choose the softener on its capacity, valve and warranty, then use the condition clause to decide between two that fit. If you plan to install it yourself and judge the water, pick a brand that takes back an installed, drained unit, and budget for the freight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you return a water softener after it has been installed?

It depends on the brand. On 2 October 2026, SoftPro accepted a complete system returned clean and drained within 6 months of shipping, and NuvoH2O accepted installed systems within 90 days with a 20% restocking fee. SpringWell accepted returns only of uninstalled, unused units in undamaged packaging. Aquasure's store policy asked for unused items in original packaging within 30 days. Read the condition clause before you cut any pipe.

Do water softeners have a trial period?

Few have a true trial, where you can install the unit, use it and send it back. Most money-back guarantees on salt-based softeners are returns windows for boxed, unused units. The closest to a trial among the brands checked here was SoftPro, which takes back a complete, drained system within 6 months of shipping with no restocking fee, though the buyer pays return freight. Electronic descalers like Eddy offer longer, use-based guarantees, but they do not remove hardness.

What is a typical restocking fee on a water softener?

Between zero and 20% among the brands checked on 2 October 2026. SoftPro charged none. SpringWell charged 10% on approved non-defective returns, and up to 25% for refused or complicated returns. NuvoH2O charged 20% on its 90-day money-back returns. On a $1,500 system, 10% is $150 and 20% is $300, before return freight.

Who pays return shipping on a water softener?

Usually the buyer. SpringWell, SoftPro and NuvoH2O all put return freight on the customer, and SpringWell and SoftPro also keep the original shipping charge. A two-tank softener ships heavy, so freight can be a real cost. Amazon offers at least one free return option on most items, but says heavy or bulky items can carry a return shipping charge.

Is Amazon's return policy different from the brand's guarantee?

Yes. Amazon's own policy covers most items for 30 days from delivery in original or unused condition. A brand's longer money-back guarantee is a separate promise from the brand, and some brands say purchases from resellers must be returned through that reseller. If you buy a softener on Amazon, ask the brand in writing whether its guarantee applies to that order.
